About

Department of Clinical Immunology has highly specialised functions regarding organ transplantation.  We are part of the clinical transplantation programmes for both heart and kidney transplantation at Aarhus University Hospital. Furthermore, we are part of the kidney transplantation programme at Odense University Hospital.

ScandiaTransplant, the Nordic organ exchange organisation, is located at Department of Clinical Immunology, which allows a close collaboration in daily patient-related cases and research.

Analysis

We perform tissue typing of organ donors (donation after brain death (DBD)) as well as living kidney donors. Furthermore, tissue typing, HLA antibody screening, HLA antibody identification and crossmatching (CDC and flowcytometry) are performed in patients waiting for either kidney or heart transplantation. All analyses are EFI accredited.

Clinical causeline

Immunological risk stratification is offered to all patients either before transplantation with a living kidney donor or before being accepted on the waiting list for a deceased donor organ.

Diagnosis and treatment of acute antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) of a transplanted organ requires close collaboration between clinicians, pathologists, and clinical immunologists.

Early diagnosis and treatment of AMR is important to prevent allograft loss. We use both HLA antibody determination as well as flowcytometric crossmatching, and we are currently the only department in Denmark offering acute analysis for acute AMR by both methods.

The laboratory also prepare patients for simultaneous kidney-pancreas and lung transplantation in close cooperation with University Hospital of Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet and performs the post-transplant monitoring of the patients.

The department has close cooperation with the transplant physicians and medical specialist doctors participate routinely in transplant conferences.

Furthermore, the department is part of Center for Transplantation at Aarhus University Hospital and is represented in the steering committee.

The laboratory has 24 hours service including available consultations with specialised medical doctors to assist the clinicians.
