The crucial question of antimicrobial resistance is addressed from several angles, including epidemiological, methodological and mechanistic investigations. The department has published studies describing the optimal detection of certain antimicrobial resistance traits in fastidious bacteria and is constantly striving to improve detection of known and novel resistance mechanisms. In collaboration with the Department of Biomedicine, Aarhus University, animal models are used to develop optimal dosing strategies and to study the clinical impact of antimicrobial resistance. New research areas include basic studies of transfer of resistance determinants between bacteria from different bacterial genera, and adaptive resistance revealed by full genome sequencing.
