Through the last decades, the possibility for detecting microorganisms has been greatly expanded by the general use of the polymerase chain reaction. The department has contributed to this field, particularly regarding diagnostics of pneumonia and sexually transmitted diseases. The department has fostered significant contributions to the classification of the bacterial genera Haemophilus and Aggregatibacter, including the description of novel bacterial species.
