Skin cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer worldwide and includes both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). NMSC consists of two main cancer groups: basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Our research in skin cancer is focused on improving treatment modalities and revealing new targets relevant for treatment. In vitro research is performed on SCC cell lines such as DJM-1 and HSC-1 isolated directly from patients with SSC. In vivo research is performed by employing a two-stage carcinogenesis mouse model where skin tumour formation is induced by DMBA/TPA. Recent results show that the drug valrubicin effectively inhibits tumour formation and TNF and the kinases MK2 and MSK1/2 play important roles in tumour development.
