The department has a strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology. Most of this research is based on registry data combining Danish administrative databases such as the National Patient Registry, the National Cancer Registry, and the Civil Registration System with clinical database such as the Danish HIV Cohort Study and the Danish Nephrology Registry. These registry-based studies are used to investigate important research questions such as risk, prognosis, and treatment outcome of various common and opportunistic infections among persons with immunodeficiency. In addition, epidemiological studies can be used to identify new areas in which clinical intervention trials are needed. A number of high-profile publications (in 2012: BMJ, CID, PLoS One) have recently been published by the department and the scientific output in this research area is expected to grow in the future. The department also participates in international epidemiological research collaborations such as EuroSIDA.
