Pathological gambling is a relatively new diagnosis which in recent years has received increasing focus. Research on gambling addiction is growing both nationally and internationally, and covers a wide range of aspects of pathological gambling, from studies of more basic characteristics such as prevalence and comorbidity to underlying psychological and biological mechanisms, and clinical studies evaluating different treatment methods. An understanding of the different levels of the disorder forms the basis for detection of patients and for developing the most efficient treatment plan.
