In the American news magazine Newsweek’s annual ranking of the world’s best hospitals for digitalization — “World’s Best Smart Hospitals” — Aarhus University Hospital (AUH) is ranked 14th out of 350 hospitals worldwide.

The ranking is carried out in collaboration with the data analytics company Statista and highlights hospitals that excel in using data and technology in both patient care and daily hospital operations.

AUH has consistently been on Newsweek’s list of World’s Best Smart Hospitals since 2021, placing between 19th and 12th. This year, AUH is number 14.

- This ranking shows that we are able to turn new technology into real value for patients — that we work smartly and innovatively, and make full use of the digital opportunities available to us.

- We succeed because our staff are curious and willing to adopt new technology, and because we constantly evaluate whether the solutions work in practice and create real value. This leads to more precise diagnoses, better workflows, and ultimately a better experience and treatment for our patients,” says Hospital Director Thomas Balle Kristensen.

Newsweek also publishes the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals” ranking, where several of AUH’s specialties are prominently featured including AUH Cardiology, ranked 36th. See the full list here.

Patient-Reported Data Leads to Better Treatment

One of the reasons for AUH’s strong position on the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list is the extensive use of patient-reported outcomes (PRO). PRO data is used in many areas, particularly within cancer care, where it is applied on a large scale.

Some examples of PRO solutions that have resulted in fewer hospital visits, less medication waste, and improved workflows:

  • Targeted Follow-Up and Fewer Visits for Sarcoma Patients
Patients with sarcoma now face fewer hospital visits and have a stronger voice in their own treatment thanks to the introduction of a digital PRO questionnaire.

  • PRO Reduces Medication Waste and Waiting Times for Cancer Patients
At the Department of Oncology, a digital questionnaire and new workflows have replaced crowded outpatient clinics and long waiting times.

  • Patients’ Verdict: Evaluating PRO Solutions After 10 Years
The PRO solution IndenBehandling has for many years reduced medication waste and improved workflows. A recent evaluation looked into patients’ perspectives.
