Using high-resolution ultrasound scanners more foetuses are diagnosed with cystic kidneys than before. The prognosis of foetuses with cystic kidneys is unknown, leaving the parents in a dilemma. Although most cases of cystic kidneys diagnosed postnatally are caused by the well known autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the prognosis for the individual patient with ADPKD can only be estimated with a substantial uncertainty. By studying the clinical outcome in cohorts of patients diagnosed with cystic kidneys pre- and post-natally, we will estimate the predictive value of clinical parameters and of family history. Further, using NGS we will screen for genes and gene variants that can predict the prognosis and/or predict which patients will benefit from prophylactic measures. The project is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aarhus University Hospital and The Danish Society of Nephrology.
