The Department of Haematology at Aarhus University Hospital receives patients from a referral area with 1.5 million inhabitants which diagnoses and treats all malignant and non-malignant diseases including allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantions. The department is JACIE accredited as a center for allogenetic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The department has a long-standing research interest in basic aspects of leukemogenesis and lymphomagenesis and has contributed with important translational aspects of minimal residual disease in AML, in Hodgkin's disease as well as in T-cell lymphomas. The department also has a long-standing interest in cancer cytogenetics, as reflected by the recent appointment of the first professor in this field in the Nordic countries.

The department participates in a wide range of international research networks and multicenter studies on novel treatments, among this European Leukaemia Net. Based on its government approved biobank of viable cells containing patient samples dating back to 1980, we ship samples all over the world as part of scientific collaborations benefitting future treatments.

Housed within the department is a clinical research unit, which is responsible for running both investigator and pharma initiated trials. Within this unit is an international unit, managing a series of multicenter international trials in lymphomas.

The department has its own research laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art machinery for cell culture, molecular biology and flow cytometric analysis.
