Epilepsy research is focused on epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Results from these studies have had immediate impact on prevention and treatment of epilepsy. Using Danish registries it has been possible to reveal a long term risk of epilepsy after traumatic brain injury, an increased risk of suicide among people with epilepsy, and a high risk of autism after prenatal valproate exposure. Clinical trials in epilepsy also hold promise for future treatment, with ongoing clinical with new AEDs in both adults and children.
