The number of patients with chronic diseases of the jaw bones is  increasing as a side effect to radiotherapy and treatment with antiresorptive drugs. Furthermore, a significant number of patients with osteomyelitis are referred to our department.
We have initiated a comprehensive study to clarify the overall occurrence of osteomyelitis in collaboration with the rheumatological, orthopaedic and paediatric specialities.

The department has contributed to a multicenter study to describe the effect of hyperbaric oxygen on the occurrence of osteoradionecrosis.

Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) has become increasingly prevalent as a consequence of the use of antiresorptive drugs for the treatment of bone metastases  and for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis. We are monitoring these patients and evaluating the effect of the jaw disease on oral health. Furhermore, the department is part of a Scandinavian study to evaluate the occurrence of ONJ.
