The Department in general

The Department of Respiratory Diseases and Allergy at Aarhus University Hospital is the largest in Denmark. It is an internationally renowned and a highly specialized department covering diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of respiratory diseases and allergology.

It is one of three Danish centers appointed by the Danish Health and Medicines Authority with highly specialized functions in allergology, interventional pulmonology and interstitial lung diseases and one of two centers dealing with rare pulmonary diseases. The Department is divided into five units dealing with patients affected by asthma and allergy, lung cancer, interstitial lung diseases including sarcoidosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and other rarer pulmonary diseases, COPD, bronchiectasis, lung infections and tuberculosis. Evaluation and follow-up of lung transplant patients is another important activity of the center.

Finally the center has an interventional pulmonology program with EBUS-EUS and Transbronchial cryobiopsy procedures already well established.

The Allergy Centre for Western Denmark

In the center we host multidisciplinary programs involving specialists in pulmonary medicine and allergology, occupational medicine, dermatology, pediatrics, pharmacology, ear-nose and throat diseases and ophthalmologists. 

West Danish Interstitial Lung Disease Registry

Our department has developed and established the West Danish Interstitial Lung Disease Registry and collaborates with other interstitial lung disease centers throughout Europe. 

Research

Research is part of the main activities in the department with PhD students projects and research activities on diffuse parenchymal lung diseases, allergy, COPD/Asthma, bronchiectasis, interventional pulmonology, lung cancer.

An allergy research unit specializing in the biology and pathophysiology of mast cell and basophil granulocytes and clinical research in lung pharmacology is well established. 

Our clinical research unit with certified study nurses and laboratory technicians perform both investigator-initiated studies and studies in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
