A long-standing collaboration with a British top-surgeon benefits Danish children with rare malformations in the urinary system.

Two children with the rare congenital disease bladder exstrophy have just been operated at Aarhus University Hospital by the British surgeon Peter Cuckow, who is one of the best surgeons in the world in this area.

Bladder exstrophy means that the bladder grows outside the abdominal wall. Only one child is born annually with this condition in Denmark and no surgeons in Denmark thus have the necessary expertise to perform this complicated operation.

Thanks to a long-standig collaboration between Peter Cuckow and Department of Urology, Aarhus University Hospital is the only hospital in Denmark offering this operation as well as other highly specialised operations in children with congenital malformations in the urinary system.

We are very happy with the close collaboration with Peter Cuckow. It means that we can offer state-of-the-art treatment for many rare congenital malformations in the urinary system in Denmark, when the alternative was to send these patients abroad, says Yazan F. Rawashdeh, Consultant at the paediatric urology unit at Department of Urology.

Long-standing collaboration

The Department of Urology has four of Denmark’s most skilled consultants in the field and with Peter Cuckow operating at the department twice a year, the surgical team is further strengthened.

The annual visits is a continuation of a collaboration dating back 20 years between the department and the English Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.

In the video Peter Cuckow and Yazan F. Rawashdeh tell about the valuable collaboration.
