Sara Kindberg and Misan Stehouwer, both midwives at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. are currently participating in the 11th International Normal Labour and Birth Conference 2016 in Australia.
The two midwives represent the Postnatal Care Clinic at Department of Obstetrics and Gyneacology at Aarhus University Hospital. They are invited to present the systematic approach by the clinic which, as the first in world, checks the stitches of women 2-3 days after delivery at the same time as performing the newborn hearing and biochemical screening tests.
The project has shown that if re-stitching is needed, the midwives can manage this within the first week after birth – with good results.
This offer has been developed through an interprofessional approach with the urogynaecologists Karl Møller Bek and Marianne Glavind-Kristensen from Aarhus University Hospital.
The project has been nominated by the WHO as one of the most promising health professional initiatives in Europe in 2016.
