The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Aarhus University Hospital is an internationally renowned and highly specialized department for diagnosis and state-of-the-art treatment of diseases within these specialities.

The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery has gained an international profile for a focused multidisciplinary team approach for diagnosis and state-of-the-art treatment for a wide spectrum of cardiothoracic an vascular diseases.

The department is a national reference centre for highly specialized interventions, as e.g. disease of thoraco-abdominal aorta, cervical esophageal cancer, tracheal resection, chronic pulmonary thromboembolism, heart transplantation and mechanical cardipulmonary support for respiratory or cardiac failure. 

The department collaborates with other cardiothoracic and vascular centres of excellence in Europe and the United States and receives patients from outside the country for treatment for chronic pulmonary embolism and pectus deformities. Experts from the department travel world-wide to teach colleagues e.g. in minimally invasive or catheter-based heart valve therapy and chest wall deformities.

The department is very active in research and is internationally renowned for translational research in as example valve surgery, epidemiological studies, interventional studies, thromosis and haemostasis and chest wall deformities. Furthermore, the department has developed and established a scientifically-based unit for self-management of anticoagulation treatment.
