International Health/Global Infectious Diseases
Our Department has a long-standing involvement in a public health center in Guinea Bissau. At this center we conduct research on tuberculosis treatment efficacy, Hepatitis A/B/C prevalence and health impact and HIV treatment complications (regimen efficacy, adherence and resistance). Part of the focus in Global Infectious Diseases research is HIV-1 especially in poor-resource settings in Africa where access to treatment and care is severely limited. Guinea Bissau has one of the highest prevalence of HIV-2 globally complicating issues regarding treatment and immunology in dual retroviral infections.
Lastly, an ongoing study investigates the impact from Schistosomiasis infection on HIV transmission and genital immune inflammation.
