New figures from the National Danish Survey of Patient Experiences 2023 (LUP) show again that patients at Aarhus University Hospital this year are very satisfied with their treatment.

Overall, a total of 32,201 patients and births at Aarhus University Hospital participated in the questionnaire survey during 2023. The annual survey showed these patients are so satisfied with their admission or visit that the hospital scored higher than the national average on many of the questions.

For the patient groups acutely admitted patients and scheduled outpatients, Aarhus University Hospital is above the national result in virtually all the areas where the treatment is measured in the questionnaire.

When asked about their overall satisfaction with their admission/visit the majority of patients were highly satisfied.  Here, 90% of planned outpatients , 89% of planned inpatients  and 87% of acutely hospitalised patients  responded that they are   or very satisfied with their admission/visit.

In some areas, the survey shows that satisfaction is significantly higher than last year. This applies to the acutely admitted patients, who express a high satisfaction when it comes to the information they receive during their admission.

Focus on the patient-perceived quality of the healthcare

LUP is the largest patient satisfaction survey in Denmark, and therefore Chief Nursing Director at Aarhus University Hospital Susanne Lauth is also very happy with the patients' feedback, which is a valued reflection of their patient experience.

- The results of this year's LUP represent what you see every day in our outpatient clinics, wards and all other corners of our fantastic hospital where we receive and treat our patients.

- Patient satisfaction is and must be one of the most important benchmarks we use to assess the overall healthcare quality, and that is why I am very proud of the professionalism and friendliness with which our employees meet our patients. In a year where there has been a lot of publicity and pressure on AUH in the media, this positive feedback from our patients in this LUP is very important and valuable to us.

- The study gives us insight into what works and what we need to continue to do more of, but just as importantly it gives us insight into what we can adjust to make it even better in the future. Especially in the comments that patients give, there are many nuggets of gold regarding small and large things we can improve.

Staff are friendly and accommodating

Across all patient groups in the study, the patients gave Aarhus University Hospital's staff top marks for the question regarding the staff being friendly and welcoming. - It is important that people are met with care and kindness when they come to AUH. This is one of the things that our employees received top marks for in the LUP survey.

- Meeting the whole person and creating a good relationship between patient and healthcare professional is a prerequisite for the high professional quality at AUH, so it's nice to see our employees being recognized for exactly those abilities.

At Aarhus University Hospital, we work strategically with the annual LUP by, among other things, choosing specific areas of action based on what we learn from the patients' answers. In the last year, we have therefore had extra focus on areas of communication, continuity, coordination and patient involvement.

FACTS about the annual survey of patient-reported experiences

The National Survey of Patient Experiences includes four sub-surveys: LUP Somatics, LUP Emergency Reception, LUP Maternity and LUP Psychiatry. Aarhus University Hospital participates in the first three studies:

LUP Somatic includes planned inpatients , acute inpatient s and planned outpatients  from somatic hospitals as well as patients who have been treated in a private hospital in accordance with the rules on extended free choice of hospital.

LUP Acute outpatient  includes acute outpatient patients in the country's emergency departments and emergency clinics.

LUP Childbirth  includes new mothers who have given birth in the country's hospitals. Since the 2022 LUP, a new examination conce pt has been introduced, meaning it is not possible to directly compare with previous years' results.
