Sofia Spampinato originates from Sicily and traveled to Denmark to start her career as a researcher within radiotherapy for cervical cancer. After almost seven years conducting her research at DCPT, she was elected Best Young Italian Researcher in Denmark in the category Life Sciences by the Italian Embassy.

The BIRD award in the Life Science category was celebrated with an award ceremony on September 27 2023 at the Italian Residence in Copenhagen. Here, Sofia Spampinato had the opportunity to present her research to embassy officials, Italian representatives and members of her family.

‘This award represents the winning challenge that began 7 years ago when I decided to leave Italy for the first time and move to a foreign country to start full time research. Despite some difficulties encountered along the way, today I don't regret this choice as Denmark has given me many professional and personal growth opportunities,’

Sofia Spampinato obtained her PhD degree at the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy in 2020 with her dissertation on 'Late urinary morbidity after radiotherapy in cervical cancer: anatomy, dose and dose-effect' and after that continued as a postdoc, moving her focus to also cover Quality of Life. Sofia Spampinato is a part of Kari Tanderup’s research group. Read more about the research group here.
