About ERN
The European Reference Networks (ERNs) are cross-border networks that bring together leading hospitals across Europe to cooperate on rare, low prevalence and complex diseases requiring highly specialised healthcare. These networks enable European specialists share knowledge and expertise, discuss challenging cases, and provide guidance on the most appropriate diagnosis and the best treatment available.
As of 2025, there are 24 ERNs created under Directive 2011/24/EU on patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare. Launched in March 2017, the networks now include 1619 specialized centers across 382 hospitals in 27 EU Member States and Norway.
