A research  group has for a number of years worked with stem cell biology. By adding the surface marker Stem Cell Antigen-1, SCA-1 to a panel of already known markers, the group pinpointed a novel population of stem cells in the hair follicle that seems to have a huge potential? be very potential. Ongoing studies seek to reveal the function of SCA-1 in normal and malignant development of epidermis. This is done using transgenic technology where the expression of SCA-1 can be switched on/off in different compartments of the epidermis. This work is done in close collaboration with Assistant Professor David Owen’s group at Columbia University, NY, USA.
