The Department of Clinical Microbiology at Aarhus University Hospital provides full diagnostic microbiological service 24 h a day for both inpatients and outpatients from the entire Central Denmark Region (1,300,000 inhabitants). Approximately 8,000,000 (? Henrik) samples per year are analysed by culture, serology, and detection of pathogenic protein or DNA. Recent advances in PCR methods support accelerated diagnosis; fast detection of microorganisms is achievable, including specific toxins and difficult-to-culture pathogens. Analysis of the full microbiota - the community of commensal, symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms at particular sampling sites – constitutes a novel area of importance.
The department performs extensive antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacterial pathogens. Results are communicated to physicians-in-charge, as well as to regional and national boards promulgating recommendations on the use of antimicrobial agents. Permanent meetings with clinical colleagues and around the clock accessibility by phone provide counselling regarding exact diagnosis of infectious diseases, sampling, epidemiology, and antimicrobial treatment.
The department is active in national and international research groups and involved in formalised scientific co-operation with Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, USA, Hôpital Universitaire de Dijon, France, and University of Tasmania, Australia.
