Cartilage injury treatment

At Orthopaedic Research Laboratory experimental research is conducted on cartilage injury treatment improvement. Primary focus is improvement of cartilage cell transplantation techniques.

A cartilage research group have existed for more than 10 years performing experimental and clinical research on cartilage repair techniques. Studies have focused on improving cartilage cell culture and transplantation techniques and the development of new tissue transplantation methods. Also there are on-going studies with stem cell-based cartilage tissue engineering. New clinical treatment methods using combined bone and cartilage transplantation have been established and implemented. We have also established a clinically related animal model of mini-pigs that allow translation of animal studies to clinical cartilage treatment.

There is work to optimize porous polymer scaffolds, scaffolds with nano-modified surfaces, and improved cultivation methods with physiological oxygen tension and more enhanced 3D environments.

Several of these studies are done in collaboration with Danish biotech companies and institutes at the University of Aarhus, and internationally with Harvard Medical School, USA. Moreover, cartilage repair clinical studies are performed  div. of sportstraumatology, Aarhus University Hospital.
