“Prevena™ vs. conventional post-operative dressing after immediate breast reconstruction”
Department of Plastic- and breastsurgery, Jonatan Damsgaard
Background
Immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) is one of the preferred procedures in risk reduction and early-stage cancer as it has several benefits for the patients. However, there may be surgical complications and the most frequent are skin necrosis, surgical site infections, implant loss and haematoma/seroma.
Purpose
To examine whether incisional negative pressure wound therapy (iNPWT) by the Prevena™ device, provides superior wound treatment compared with conventional wound therapy in patients undergoing IBR.
Methods
The project is conducted as a randomized controlled trial where 30 patients are treated with Prevena™ and 30 patients are treated with conventional post-operative dressing.
Perspective
The results may be reduced length of hospitalization in women undergoing IBR, a better breast reconstructive result and reduced time to adjuvant therapy.
