The VAPOR-2 study is a prospective randomised European multicenter study which investigates the effect of two different anesthetics on renal function after renal transplantation from deceased donors. One group receives Propofol during anesthesia. The other group receives Sevoflurane(volatile anesthetic). The protocol for anesthesia is otherwise identical.

It is known that volatile anesthetics have conditioning effects on many organs. The hypothesis is that the conditioning effect of the volatile anesthetics may improve the outcome of the renal transplantations by reducing delayed graft function, risk for acute rejections and damage to the kidney.

The study originates from University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands and started april 2017.

Aarhus University Hospital has included a substudy assessing delirium during the first two post operative days after renal transplantation.
