The Department of Rheumatology at Aarhus University Hospital is a highly specialised department diagnosing and treating patients with all kinds of rheumatic diseases. The department is dynamic and innovative, dedicated to excellence in research, education, and clinical care at high international level. 

The department is referral Central and North Denmark Regions for complicated and rare autoimmune diseases including inflammatory joint diseases, connective tissue diseases, antiphospholipid syndromes, vasculitides, complicated sarcoidosis, hereditable disorders of the connective tissue, complicated pregnancies in autoimmune diseases and rare rheumatic diseases. 

The department focuses on integrated patient care and treatments span from standard medical treatments to new treatment strategies including biologic treatments (TNF-alpha-inhibitors, IL-6R-inhibitors, T cell inhibitors, B cell inhibitors, etc.), and other state-of-the-art treatment regimens. 

Most autoimmune diseases affect several organs and the department collaborates with various medical specialties such as nephrology, respiratory diseases, cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neurology, haematology, dermatology, clinical immunology, radiology, clinical physiology. 

The Department of Rheumatology has a longstanding research interest into rheumatoid arthritis including clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological research. In recent years research also on lupus, systemic sclerosis, vasculititis and other rheumatic diseases has been successfully established. 

The department is especially known for its leading role in randomised, controlled studies in early rheumatoid arthritis, which has contributed to international treatment strategies and new prognostic markers for treatment response and the course of disease. Housed within the department is a clinical research unit, which is running both investigator and pharma initiated trials.

The department collaborates with several reputable centres in Scandinavia, Europe and United States.
