Activated Vitamin D and Prednisolone in minimal change nephropathy

This investigator initiated, randomized, controlled study aims to improve treatment for patients with nephrotic syndrome and minimal change nephropathy (MCN). The study will examine whether low dose prednisolone in combination with active vitamin D is as efficient as high dose prednisolone to attain remission in patients with MCN, but with lower amounts of adverse effects. The study examines the possibility of personalized medicine based on pharmacodynamics of prednisolone, DNA-analysis of genes responsible of metabolism of steroid and immunohistochemical measurements of glucocorticoid receptors in kidney biopsies.

Furthermore, the study will investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying nephrotic syndrome, proteinuria induced renal damage and the associated sodium retention and edema formation and will strengthen and enhance the collaboration between nephrology centers in Denmark.
