Benign diseases of the oesophagus and stomach:

Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux, Barrett’s esophagus, paraesophageal hernias, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), motility disorders and obesity (bariatric surgery) are treated in the department.

Malignant diseases of the esophagus and stomach:

Cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract is managed by a team of upper GI surgeons altogether with thoracic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists in a multidiciplinary team (MDT) approach. The department is a major referral centre for patients in the middle and nothern part of Jutland.
All patients undergo diagnostic examinations planned by the MDT using PET-CT, MR, ultrasonography, advanced upper GI endoscopy and laparoscopy, thus securing a high level of accuracy before decisions on treatment are made. During pre/postoperative oncological treatment patients are evaluated and suitable candidates for a surgical intervention are found.

Diseases of the liver, biliary tree and pancreas:

Most patients operated for diseases of the liver, biliary tree and pancreas (HPB) have a malignant diagnosis. Liver resection and ablative techniques (radiofrequency ablation - RFA) are performed for primary and secondary (mostly from colorectal cancer) malignant liver tumours. Many kinds of liver resections, amongst other two-stage resections and large liver resections (up to six segments) are performed. Laparoscopic liver resection is a standard treatment at the department and has been performed since 2007. Different techniques reducing blood loss during transsection of liver parenchyma have been developed and are now used routinely in order to limit blood transfusions as much as possible.
All patients suspected of malignant HPB disease are evaluated at the multidisciplinary conference with tumour specialists.
Resections of the liver, biliary tree and pancreas are in rare cases performed also in patients with benign disease. 

Endoscopic treatment:

The Endoscopy Unit at the Department of Surgery (section for upper gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery) is one of the leading departments in gastrointestinal endoscopy in Denmark. The unit is well-known for its high standards in Europe and worldwide. It serves as a reference centre for advanced endoscopic therapy both in and outside the department's referral area.
The unit is acknowledged particularly for its distinguished level of advanced biliopancreatic endoscopy, upper gastrointestinal  endoscopy of both malignant and benign conditions, treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and small bowel endoscopy. A more important role is gradually assigned  to endoscopic ultrasound  and bariatric endoscopy both concerning  diagnosis and therapy. The unit is actively involved in developing and introducing novel diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
